March Meeting: Planning for Collectibles

The March chapter meeting will be held on Tuesday, March 13, 2012 at Connolly's Pub & Restaurant.  The guest speaker will be Caryn B. Keppler, Esq., a Partner in the New York law firm of Hartman & Craven LLP, who will talk about “Ten Mistakes Made When Planning For Collectibles.”

Caryn Keppler graduated cum laude from Binghamton University, took her J.D. at Brooklyn Law School and is admitted to the Bar in New York and New Jersey. An attorney with the Internal Revenue Service before joining Hartman & Craven LLP, Ms. Keppler practices in the areas of taxation, trusts & estates, and personal services. She has extensive experience in all aspects of estate, gift and charitable planning for foreign and domestic individuals, conventional and alternative families, as well as business succession and continuity planning. Certified as an Estate Planning Law Specialist, she is active in professional organizations, serving on the Trusts & Estates Sections and the LGBT Committees of the New York State Bar Association and the New York County Lawyers Association. An author and speaker on professional topics and a certified yoga instructor, Ms. Keppler also finds time to serve on the Planned Giving Committee of the Good Samaritan Hospital Foundation.  For more details, see her professional bio.

November Meeting: Appraisals Subject to Audit Review

The November chapter meeting will be held on Wednesday, November 9, 2011 at Connolly's Pub & Restaurant.  The guest speaker will be Bernard M. Sencer, ASA, President of Sencer Appraisal Associates Inc., who will lead a discussion about “Appraisals Subject to Audit Review.”

Mr. Sencer, who took his B.S. at the University of Rochester and his M.B.A. at the Baruch School of Business, is a two-term past Regional ASA Governor, who has been a consultant to the U.S. Treasury Dept., the F.D.I.C., the N.Y. State Insurance Dept. and the G.S.A., among other federal, state, and municipal agencies.  His practice comprises appraisals of industrial, commercial and institutional machinery and equipment, both here and abroad.

The discussion will treat issues which arise when an appraisal written for a
specific intended use becomes the subject of an audit review. The panel will  focus on inter-disciplinary questions, such as the effects of the definition of “fair value.”

This discussion is a must for appraisers in all disciplines! The program qualifies for one hour of ASA Continuing Education Credit.

    The March chapter meeting will be held on Wednesday, March 9, 2011 at Connolly's Pub & Restaurant.  The guest speaker will be Tamir Dardashtian, JD, an attorney at Anchin, Block & Anchin LLP who will talk about “Cashing In on the New Tax Law: Estate, Gift and GST Tax Law Changes.”

    dardashtian[1] Tamir Dardashtian, Esq. earned his JD from the Brooklyn Law School and a BSBA in Accounting and Finance from the Boston University School of Management. A Senior Tax Manager at the New York City accounting firm of Anchin, Block & Anchin LLP, he has co-authored "Tax Effects of Healthcare and HIRE Legislation," "Some Highlights of the Recently Enacted Stimulus Bill," and "The HIRE Act and the Health Care Reform Acts" for Anchin webinars and publications. Mr. Dardashtian will discuss recent tax law changes relating to trusts, estates, gift and generation skipping taxes.

    Business Valuation Seminar: April 2011

    The Philadelphia Chapter of the American Society of Appraisers (ASA) will hold its annual Business Valuation Seminar at the Doubletree Guest Suites Hotel in Plymouth Meeting, PA on Friday, April 29, 2011.  The program includes sessions focused on limited partnership valuation, private cost of capital, financial fraud and its impact on business appraisal, recent important court decisions affecting business appraisal, and a panel discussion of matrimonial law appraisal.

    jamesrpark James R. Park, ASA, a partner in the San Antonio, TX firm of Munroe, Park & Johnson, Inc., will discuss "Valuing Limited Partnerships" from 8:30 to 9:30 am, exploring both income and market approaches. He will also talk about recent litigation of family limited partnerships, including his own experiences. Mr. Park was graduated from Texas A&M University with a BBA in Finance and contributed to the Comprehensive Guide for the Valuation of Family Limited Partnerships and other publications.     roberttslee Robert T. Slee, President of the Charlotte, NC firm of Robertson & Foley, will talk about "The Private Cost of Capital," a discount rate model that measures private company risk. He will talk from 9:30 am to 12:15 pm, with a 15-minute break at 10:45 am. Mr. Slee, who has an MA from the University of Chicago and an MBA from Case Western Reserve University, founded MidasNation, a community dedicated to helping owners increase the value of their businesses. He is the author of over 200 journal articles and several books, the most recent of which is Midas Marketing: How Midas Managers Make Markets.

    davidduffus David Duffus, a Partner in ParenteBeard's Forensic, Litigation and Valuation Services group, will talk from 1:15 to 2:30 pm about "Financial Statement Fraud, including recent statistics, typical schemes, and the impact on business valuation. A Certified Public Accountant with an MBA in Accounting and Finance from the University of Pittsburgh, he specializes in complex litigation services, forensic accounting and valuation services assignments. Mr. Duffus, who joined ParenteBeard from PricewaterhouseCoopers, is a frequent speaker on fraud and its economic damages.

    johnbarton John Barton, ASA, President of the Lyndell, PA firm of Brandywine Valuation Consultants, LLC., will review "Recent Valuation Cases," primarily US Tax Court and Court of Appeals decisions in estate, gift tax and equitable distribution cases in PA and NJ from 2:30 – 3:25 pm.  Mr. Barton holds an MBA from LaSalle in Finance and Accounting, and is a specialist in the analysis of closely-held stock, preferred stock, intangible assets, and debt securities. He has taught business valuation courses for ASA, Big Four accounting firms, the IRS, and at Villanova University, and has appeared as an expert witness in PA, NJ, and FL courts and in US Federal District Court.

    Gary Friedlander, Esq., ASA, will lead a panel discussion from 3:40 to 4:40 pm on "Matrimonial Law Appraisal Practice." Mr. Friedlander's Norristown, PA practice concentrates on family law and the valuation of closely held corporations and professional practices. He holds an MBA from Drexel University and took his JD from the Villanova University School of Law. He is a member of the Pennsylvania and Montgomery County Bar Associations and is a participant in their family law sections.
